Title: Non-Consumptive Ocean Recreation in Oregon: Human Uses, Economic Impacts & Spatial Data

Description:
Abstract:
The data summarized in this particular layer are the Last trip shore activities group of respondses. This group was an aggregation of repondses for the following activities: beach going, scenic enjoyment, storm watching, biking/hiking, off-road vehicles, and photography. Results from this group were summarized into cumulative polygon data, using the Oregon spatial planning unit grid.
Purpose: These data were collected to create a baseline of use patterns for Oregon's recreational non-consumptive ocean users.
Supplemental Information:
The These data include only the last trip data collected over the summer of 2010. These data were collected as part of Oregon's Territorial Sea Plan revision.
This data, and the larger study referenced at the above URL, provides high-quality spatially explicit information on current non-consumptive recreational ocean use on the Oregon coast. Specifically, the study: identifies and estimates the size of the Oregon non-consumptive recreational ocean user community; supplies spatially explicit information on current non-consumptive ROU use including activity, extent, and demographics.

Logical Consistency Report:
Data editing protocol was developed to ensure a consistent and accurate dataset. Each group (boating, ocean, shore, wildlife) were edited based on certain criteria.
Boating group:
1) All points must be in a waterbody, including, ocean, bay, and estuary.
Ocean group:
1) Edited all points that fell on land so they would only be in water.
2) Determined if a point is too far offshore to realistically be accessed by human-powered methods, with the exception being offshore reefs, which resulted in the data being removed.
Shore group:
1) Edited all points that fell in water so they would only be on land.
2) Removed points that were too far inland to realistically have any influence on the shore region.
Wildlife group:
1) Points could be either in the water or on land, but should be within a reasonable distance to shoreline.

Process Step:
Process Description:
The survey responses were downloaded from the internet and the spatial data were updated with coordinate system information (WGS 1984). The spatial data were then re-projected into Albers Conical Equal Area (NAD 83). To move the process forward, the data were then imported into a geodatabase built for this analysis. The original table format was well suited for collecting information; however, it was not appropriate for the data analysis needed, and as a result, the data tables needed to be reorganized. The purpose of this reorganization was to create an activity matrix for each layer. The matrices were built so that the data could be summarized to the PU grid cells, which required that the information needed to be a number field. To do this, we converted data into an activity matrix where a number field (type - double) was added to the spatial layer for each activity (e.g., beach going, biking/hiking, surfing, etc.). The end result was a new field for each activity that was then updated with a binary value of 0 or 1 for every activity point (e.g., every surfing activity point was updated with a 1 in the matrix under the surfing column).
