Title: West Coast Surficial Geolgic Habitat, version 3.6.1, ATSML, 2011
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: vector digital data
Publication Information:
Publication Place: Corvallis, OR
Publisher: Active Tectonics and Seafloor Mapping Lab, COAS, Oregon State University
Description:
Abstract: Surficial Geologic Habitat for the Washington, Oregon and California continental margins.
Purpose:
These data were originally developed to support the identification and delineation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for west coast groundfish. Subsequently, they have been revised through hand interpretation in support of Oregon's efforts to implement Marine Reserves within the Territorial Sea.
Version 3.6 was developed in support of Oregon's Territorial Sea Planning process for the short term need of wave energy facilities siting.
Supplemental Information:
This version of the data, v3.6.1, is identical to v3.6 with the exception of the addition of kelp canopy extent burned in and reclassified by TNC staff as a proxy for habitat type 'Rock'. Canopy extent was defined as the maximum identified across ODFW's Modern Kelp Surveys in years 1990, 1996-99, and ODFW's 2010 digital multispectral imagery (DMSI) of kelp canopy for southern Oregon (Cape Arago to Brookings).

Version 2.0 Attribute Table Changes Include:
(1) The addition of a second SGH habitat attribute class, "GEO_HAB2", which is identical to the "GEO_HAB" attribute code in most cases except where a Version 1 or 2 polygon falls within the areas: (1) remaped by Lanier (previously unpublished data and Lanier 2006 MS Thesis), or (2) within the Territorial Sea of Oregon (Cmpletely remapped for Version3). Again, the original classification coding from Version 1 or 2 is retained in the "GEO_HAB" attribute field and polygons that have been remaped and recoded, by Lanier, are denoted with an asterisk (*) after the GEO_HAB attribute code. Territorial Sea polygons have a "NA" GEO_HAB attribute because the new mapping superceeds the old mapping. The new code is a more detailed interpretation of Simrad em300 multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data on the northern Oregon outer continental shelf and upper slope. The Greene et al. 2005 classification scheme was modified slightly to fit our interpretation of the data.
Example:
GEO_HAB = She* -- Original Version 1 or 2 habitat polygon attribute coding, * denotes a remaping occured
GEO_HAB2 = She/s_d -- Updated habitat polygon attribute code after remaping.
What this means: The original maps (Versions 1 & 2) classified this polygon as rocky shelf. Subsequent mapping with additional data reveals something more about the composition of this polygon (see Overview citation code descriptions). It's still a rocky shelf habitat so the "GEO_HAB" code remains valid. the GEO_HAB2 provides the enhanced classification. Both attribute fields are kept because we can't enhance every polygon in the map until the appropriate data is collected at which point the "GEO_HAB" attribute field will become deprecated.
(2) We have added 3 new attribute fields (SGH_prefix, SGH_lith1, and SGH_lith2) These attributes fields are included to provide a more accurate cross-database mapping of seafloor habitats to species habitat preferences. More specifically, this dataset is bieng developed in harmony with the NOAA Fisheries NWFSC Habitat Use Database of HUD (a collection of habitat prefrences by species and lifestage for westcoast groundfish). We found the Version 1 and 2 "Geo_Hab" attribute codes (after Greene et. al) difficult to map to the HUD which uses a slightly different habitat classification scheme. Most simply, we've simplified the "Geo_Hab" attribute code into a 2 character code we call "SGH_prefix" without losing any information that is useful for identifying species-habitat relationships from the HUD database.

Version 3.0 interpretation is detailed in Melinda Agapito's MS Thesis (2008, College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Science, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331). In brief, the new territorial sea mapping followed a compatible interpretation method but utilized previously unknown and unavailable historic data from the U.S. Office of Coast and Geodetic Survey (Now the National Ocean Service).
Source Information:
Source Citation Abbreviation: Surficial Geologic Habitat, Version 3.5
Source Contribution:
This Version 3.5 product represents a significant revision to earlier SGH maps for Oregon. The most significant change is the hand digitization of habitat types in the vicinity of pilot and proposed marine reserves within Oregon's territorial sea (generally, the first 3 nm from the beach). This revision was completed through visual interpretation of both bathymetric and backscatter and ground truth data collected subsequent to the release of the Version 3.0 map.
Version 3.5 Attribute Table Changes Include:
GeoHab2 attribute field was dropped for Version 3.5 because it was not maintianed well and we do not have confidence that it represented anything meaningful anymore.
Source Information:
Source Citation Abbreviation: Surficial Geologic Habitat, Version 3.6
Source Contribution:
Version 3.6 was generated by NOAA collaborators as a merge between v3.1 within offshore federal waters (Surficial Geologic Habitat maps for the Washington and Oregon continental marginsÂ’) and v3.5 within the extent of Oregon's Terrestrial Sea (Interim Surficial Geologic Habitat Map for the Oregon Territorial Sea.Â’)

Attribute Definition:
A simplified reclassification of habitat types was applied by TNC staff per the field [NEDA_reclas]. Two rulesets for the reclassification were necessary owing to differences in the original classifications: one was applied to WA and OR; the other to CA. For WASHINGTON and OREGON: (1) Habitat type 'Rock' = either SGH_Lith_1 or SGH_Lith_2 type is 'rock', 'boulder', or 'boulder/sand'; (2) Habitat type 'Sand' = Both SGH types are sand, or SGH_Lith_1 is sand and SGH_Lith_2 is mud, or SGH_Lith_1 is sand and SGH_Lith_2 is blank. . (note: the single polygon with SGH_Lith_1 of Sand and a SGH_Lith_2 of mud/shell was classed as Sand); (3) Habitat type 'Mud' = Both SGH types are mud, or SGH_Lith_1 is mud and SGH_Lith_2 is sand, or SGH_Lith_1 is mud and SGH_Lith_2 is blank. (4) Habitat type 'Gravel, Cobble, Shell, or Mixed' = all other combinations that donÂ’t fit into one of the 3 preceding categories . For CALIFORNIA: (1) 'Rock' = SGH_Lith_1 or SGH_Lith_2 is 'rock' or 'island'; (2) 'Sand' = SGH_Lith_1 and/or SGH_Lith_2 is 'soft' and depth is 200m; (4) 'Gravel, Cobble, Shell, or Mixed' = all other combinations that donÂ’t fit into one of the 3 preceding categories.
