Description:
Abstract:
We used AVHRR satellite imagery (http://noaasis.noaa.gov/NOAASIS/ml/avhrr.html) to detect sea surface temperatures (SST) off the west coast of the US, from Cape Mendocino, CA north to the international border with Canada. We collected 1.1km resolution monthly composites of SST from NOAA's CoastWatch West Coast Regional node (http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/data.html) during the upwelling season (June-Aug) from 1998-2004. We eliminated any image that had cloud cover which left us with a total of 11 cloud-free images. We mosaiced (averaged) those images, and clipped them to our ecoregional boundary (shoreline [excluding estuaries, rivers and the Strait] to the toe of the slope). The units of the data are degrees C. This averaged raster was subsequently used to derive the vector dataset 'chlorophyll_pnwm', whereby the chlorophyll-a were classified into into two categories: high persistence, using using >=1.5 SD below the mean, and low persistence, using 0.5 to 1.5 SD below the mean.
Purpose:
This dataset was developed by The Nature Conservancy for the Pacific Northwest Marine Ecoregional Analysis, and is now being used in contribution to the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife's Nearshore Ecological Data Atlas.
Supplemental Information:
These metadata are provisional, pending review by the TNC staff responsible for the dataset's development.
Source data: 'SST, NOAA POES AVHRR, LAC, 0.0125 degrees, West US, Day and Night'. NOAA CoastWatch provides sea surface temperature (SST) products derived from NOAA's Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES). This data is provided at high resolution (0.0125 degrees) for the North Pacific Ocean. Measurements are gathered by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument, a multiband radiance sensor carried aboard the NOAA POES satellites.
