Title: Salmon River Recreational Pacific Halibut Fishery Use and Value Grid, Ecotrust, 2010
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: raster digital data
Description:
Abstract:
These data are an aggregation of several individual interviews in the private vessel sport boat sector. The fisheries layers used were derived from interviews with fishermen/captains in Salmon River. These recreational fishing grounds represent Pacific halibut.
Purpose:
This spatial layer is the result of data collected through the Marine Fisheries Uses and Values Project - winter of 2009 through the summer of 2010. The goal of the Marine Fisheries Uses and Values Project was to compile a comprehensive map of the commercial and recreational fishing use patterns along the entire Oregon coast using the expert knowledge of fishermen themselves. The main objectives of this project were:
1.Incorporate commercial fishermen's knowledge into deliberations by the Oregon Coastal Management Program and the Ocean Policy Advisory Council on the development of future amendments to the Oregon Territorial Sea Plan (TSP);
2.Use this information to improve the spatial resolution and the accuracy of landings and logbook data;
3.Develop accurate maps of the local fishing grounds and of their economic importance to local fishermen.
Supplemental Information: This project was part of the Oregon Territorial Sea Plan Amendment Process.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
Data was derived from interviews with fishermen and each fisherman gave boundaries to their fishing grounds and the value attributed to those grounds. Not all fishermen have the same method for describing their fishing areas, so there is variablity in the results. Some fishermen would give several very detailed areas and other fishermen would give one large, but less detailed area.
Completeness Report: This data is complete.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
All data is overlayed on NOAA nautical charts, with all layers sharing the same projection. Generally, most of the areas were captured at the coastal scale (1:190,000) but for the trawl fishery and sometimes salmon the open water chart was used (1:1,200,000).

Process Step:
Process Description: Ecotrust staff interviews fisherman, collecting data on fishing grounds, fishing history, and value of fishing grounds.
Process Date: 20090324
Process Step:
Process Description: Edit data to specific area that fisherman described, using north and south boundaries, depth ranges, or other geographic details.
Process Date: 20090324
Process Step:
Process Description: Quality control to check that penny value equals 100 for each fishery that the fisherman participates in and that the fishery shapes are correct.
Process Date: 20090324
Process Step:
Process Description: Data are combined through an aggregation process where the landings data are distributed to each shaped based on penny allocations and then combined into one dataset for a fishery.
Process Step:
Process Description: Single fishery datasets were created for each of the fishing sectors. The sectors included were commercial, charter, and recreation (or sport).
Process Step:
Process Description:
These data are the result of combining aggregate fishing grounds for the commercial sector for Port Orford. The data were max normalized using the following equation x = (x - min) / (max - min). The normaliztion put all the datasets on the same scale so that they could be combined without losing valuable areas from samller or lesser valued fisheries. When aggregated together the areas of importance for each fishery are revealed and overlapping areas of importance across fisheries are shown as areas of high importance. The commercial fishing ground aggregates that were combined were Dungeness crab (trap), rockfish (fixed gear), salmon (troll), urchin (dive).
