Description:

Abstract:
This dataset depicts Oregon's rocky shoreline. The rocky shoreline includes beaches or the base of cliffs that have rocky substrate, including cobble, gravel, boulder and bedrock. Rocky shoreline was delineated from color-infrared aerial photographs of the entire Oregon coast shot at minus tides in 1994.
Purpose: The purpose of this dataset was to delineate shoreline features for resource management and spatial planning purposes.
Supplemental Information:
Photographs were the actual contact prints of the negatives, providing superior resolution at a scale of 1:7200. Features of the coastline in the photographs were qualitatively aligned with the same features in a BLM digital coastline in ArcGIS. The BLM digital coastline was then clipped where rocky shoreline features were noted and copied into a separate "rockyshore" GIS layer.

Actual shoreline segments were excerpted directly from BLM cartographic state boundary line file for the State of Oregon. Aerial imagery was simply used to create breakpoints in the BLM line, so that sandy and rocky sections of coastline could be segregated.
