Abstract:
Electronic navigational charts, ENC, are vector files of navigational chart data. The electronic navigational charts are primarily intended to support the navigation of vessels in the territorial waters of the United States.
Purpose:
The data contained in the ENCs may also be used for any other coastal mapping purposes that require up-to-date information similar to that portrayed on traditional navigational charts. The current release of the ENCs is PROVISIONAL. This means that the ENCs are currently not for navigational use and are provided for system development, testing, familiarization and user feedback.
Supplemental Information:
The electronic navigational chart (ENC) files that may be downloaded from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are to be considered provisional products and are provided for the purposes of software development and testing, electronic navigation training, user familiarization with the ENC product, and evaluation of the utility of the ENC to provide feedback to NOAA for future enhancement of the ENC. This is due to the fact that ENC updates are not currently available for download, thus the provisional ENCs may not reflect the most current information that is necessary for safe navigation. Once ENC updates are available from NOAA on a routine basis, the provisional status of the ENCs may be removed and they may be considered official navigational products at that time.

Mariners must at all times use common prudence and navigational judgment and follow standard navigational operating procedures. Copying, reproduction of the provisional ENCs to any other server or location for further reproduction or redistribution is 1) the provisional ENCs and supplementary files including the CATALOG.030 and README.TXT are included in their entirety, 2) this disclaimer is displayed to anyone who accesses the provisional ENCs, and 3) a reference to this Web site is included so that anyone accessing the provisional ENCs is advised of where they originated. If these provisional ENCs are incorporated into any other product in a form other than as provided by NOAA, the producer of that product assumes full liability and must adhere to conditions 2 and 3 described in the paragraph above concerning copying or reproduction.
