Title: NRI Marine Research Transects, OCMP, 2012
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This dataset includes research transects off the coast of Oregon. Research transects are lines of research where data is continuously collected along the line. The most continuously sampled transect is the line used by the underwater gliders, which are autonomous underwater vehicles that collect continuous oceanographic data along a line. Currently, the gliders use the Newport Hydrographic Line to collect information. However, they are proposed for other areas in Oregon in the future as part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, including a line parallel to the coast of Oregon at 126 degrees longitude in deep offshore waters. Other transects included in the inventory are cruises that make continuous observations of marine mammals and seabirds.
Purpose: The Nearshore Research Inventory is a research project designed to inventory and map the current and future use of Oregon's nearshore environment by the research community.
Supplemental Information:
Oregon's coastline is gaining attention for the waves off of the coast, and not just from surfers. State and federal policy-makers and renewable energy investors are interested in harnessing energy from Oregon's waves to create electricity. The state has been identified as an ideal place for wave energy development for two reasons. First, the wave energy is in plentiful supply since the waves have had the whole distance of the Pacific Ocean to gain momentum from wind as it blows towards the Oregon coastline. Second, there is already infrastructure in place to transport that energy from the ocean to the communities on land. The Department of Land Conservation and Development's Coastal Management Program has engaged the research community in order to understand where, when, and what kind of research is being conducted along the shoreline and off the coast of Oregon. This information will be imported into MarineMap, the spatial decision making tool that the state is using to make decisions about best possible locations for wave energy devices.
