Description:
Abstract:
This layer was created from the other individual year kelp surveys to show the maximum known extent of Oregon's kelp canopy. Included are: an Oregon coastwide inventory of canopy kelp in 1990, that was conducted to understand the distribution of kelp in the nearshore region, and five other years of southern Oregon surveys.
Purpose: To provide a single kelp layer which shows the maximum known extent of kelp canopy from the individual kelp inventory surveys.
Supplemental Information:
The six survey years span multiple survey methods, so individual metadata for each survey should be consulted to fully understand the constraints of any given year.
In 1990 kelp beds were photographed under contract with Ecoscan Resources Data. Ecoscan georeferenced and mapped the canopy data by giving a 50 meter radius to account for growth, and plants within 100 meters of each other (within 100 meters of the 50 meter radius) were included in a polygon. This technique created larger kelp beds than the technique used on the 1996-1999 data, and as such, the 1990 data are not directly comparable to the 1996-1999 data. Also, the 1990 kelp beds were delineated off slides rather than photographic prints which may have affected the precision of the exercise. Another point worth noting is that the polygons representing kelp beds off Cape Arago (1990) include Macrocystis sp. (giant kelp). Macrocystis was not found elsewhere on the coast.
The 1996-99 series of surveys are more comparable to each other. ODFW contracted with Bergman Photographic, Inc. to photograph the canopy of bull kelp, Nereocystis leutkeana, at 5 selected reefs off southern Oregon during the fall of 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Specifications were set to ensure optimum visual appearance of the kelp canopy and to ensure continuity between flightlines and between years.
In 2010, digital multispectral imagery of kelp canopy in southern Oregon was acquired and gridded at 1m resolution. The geographic coverage of the aerial survey is from Cape Arago (located near Coos Bay) to the Oregon-California border. The purpose of this survey was to update ODFW's kelp biomass surveys of the mid 1990's. The intent was to conduct a coastwide survey, however ocean and weather conditions limited the survey to the south coast only.

Access Constraints: Data are not available for download from this site, however data may be acquired by contacting ODFW directly.
Use Constraints:
Bull kelp grows in nearshore waters on rocky substrate, but does not occur on all rocky substrate. Therefore, these data cannot be used to indicate location and extent of all rocky substrate. Bull kelp is limited to depths of less than 60 ft. Annual variations occur in the distibution and density of kelp.

Logical Consistency Report: The six survey years span multiple survey methods, so individual metadata for each survey should be consulted to fully understand the constraints of any given year.
Completeness Report: The 1990 aerial kelp survey covered the entire Oregon coastal nearshore region. All other years of surveys covered only south coast areas (south of Cape Arago).
Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
ODFW kelp canopy data from surveys in 1990, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2010 were individually checked and corrected for polygon topology, and then combined together (unioned) to create a single polygon layer that maintains the temporal record (kelp or no kelp) of each area. A new column 'COUNT' was added to summarize the number of surveys in which kelp was documented for each polygon.
