Description:

Abstract:
We used SeaWiFS satellite imagery (http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/SeaWiFS) to detect chlorophyll-a concentrations off the west coast of the US, from Cape Mendocino, CA north to the international border with Canada. We collected 1.1km resolution monthly composites of chlorophyll-a from NOAA's CoastWatch West Coast Regional node (http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/data.html) for the summer months (June-Sept) from 1998-2005. We eliminated any image that had cloud cover which left us with a total of 21 cloud-free images. We mosaiced (averaged) those images, and clipped them to our ecoregional boundary (shoreline [excluding estuaries, rivers and the Strait] to the toe of the slope). The units of the data are mg Chl-a m^-3. This averaged raster was subsequently used to derive the vector dataset 'chloro_pnwm', whereby values were classified, per recommendation by Dr. Francis Chan (Asst.Professor, Oregon State University Dept. of Zoology), in the following bins: 0-0.5, 0.5-2,2-10,10-20,20-50,50+ (mg/m^-3).
Purpose:
This dataset was developed by The Nature Conservancy for the Pacific Northwest Marine Ecoregional Analysis, and is now being used in contribution to the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife's Nearshore Ecological Data Atlas.

Source data: 'Chlorophyll-a, Orbview-2 SeaWiFS, 0.0125 degrees, West US'. NOAA CoastWatch distributes chlorophyll-a concentration images from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) on the Orbview-2 satellite. Because data is purchased under a NOAA contract with GeoEye, data distribution is restricted to authorized users. Chlorophyll images, however, are publicly accessible. Questions regarding data access should be directed to NOAA CoastWatch.
