Abstract:
A total of 393 seabird colonies were identified along the Oregon coast. This data set depicts the linear extent of onshore seabird colonies in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane, Coos, and Curry Counties, Oregon. The primary source for this data is:

Purpose:
The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of Oregon's seabird colonies for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is expected that data will be replaced as more recent and accurate information is collected.
Supplemental Information: The original data from the USFWS was in a geodatabase. At NOAA Fisheries (Portland office), data were exported as a shapefile and reprojected into Albers Conical Equal Area Projection, NAD 83.

A total of 393 seabird colonies were identified along the Oregon coast in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane, Coos, and Curry Counties, Oregon. Current and historical information on colony locations and estimates of breeding seabirds were compiled into databases for all known seabird colonies in Oregon.

For linear onshore colonies, the location is described by the center point. USGS 1:24,000 Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) and Digital Orthographic Quadrangles (DOQs) were used as references. The horizonal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy check plots to the source materials and verifying the location of the data on-screen relative to other data layers in the same geographic area.

Seabird colonies were originally drawn in by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists on hardcopy USGS 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. These points, boundaries, and extents were then digitized in ArcMap. Colony reference names are based on the GNIS and the Catalog of Oregon Seabird Colonies.

A shapefile route representing the coastline of Oregon was produced by a combination of heads-up digitization off of 1:24,000 scale National Geographic TOPO! maps and import from edited 1:24,000 USGS hydrography Digital Line Graphs (DLGs). DLGs were edited to remove inland features prior to merge. The file was originally digitized as an Arc/INFO polyline coverage, which was converted into a route using the MAKEROUTE command available in the ArcPlot module of Arc/INFO, and then exported as a shapefile (orcoast24kng.shp).

A line feature class representing the linear extent of onshore colonies was extracted from the orcoast24kng.shp route. The center point for each linear extent was calculated and merged into the location_final shapefile, which represents point locations for all of Oregon's seabird colonies.
