Description:
Abstract:
A total of 393 seabird colonies were identified along the Oregon coast. This data set depicts groups of offshore rocks and islands that comprise a single censused seabird colony in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane, Coos, and Curry Counties, Oregon. The primary source for this data is:
Naughton, M. B., D. S. Pitkin, R. W. Lowe, K. J. So, and C. S. Strong. 2007. Catalog of Oregon seabird colonies. U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Biological Technical Publication FWS/BTP-R1009-2007, Washington, D.C.
Purpose:
The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of Oregon's seabird colonies for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is expected that data will be replaced as more recent and accurate information is collected.
Supplemental Information: The original data from the USFWS was in a geodatabase. At NOAA Fisheries (Portland office), data were exported as a shapefile and reprojected into Albers Conical Equal Area projection, NAD 83.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report: Colony numbers and complex status are based on the Catalog of Oregon Seabird Colonies. Extensive review is conducted until all errors are corrected.
Logical Consistency Report: All polygons are closed and all dangling arcs are removed.
Completeness Report:
A total of 393 seabird colonies were identified along the Oregon coast in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane, Coos, and Curry Counties, Oregon. Current and historical information on colony locations and estimates of breeding seabirds were compiled into databases for all known seabird colonies in Oregon.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Polygons representing groups of offshore rocks and islands, which comprise a single seabird colony, were digitized using 1:24,000 USGS DRGs as reference. The horizonal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy check plots to the source materials and verifying the location of the data on-screen relative to other data layers in the same geographic area.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: Not applicable.
Lineage:
Source Information:
Source Contribution:
Island groups representing seabird colonies were originally drawn in by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists on hardcopy USGS 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. These boundaries were then digitized in ArcMap. Island group names are based on the GNIS and the Catalog of Oregon Seabird Colonies.

Attribute:
Attribute Label: COLNO_GIS
Attribute Definition:
Catalog colony number. The first 3 digits are the map number (based on 1:250,000 USGS Quadrangle numbers); the next digits are the 'site number' (both map number and site number constitute colony number on the Oregon data sheets). If there are digits to the right of a decimal place, these are colonies added after the original colony number was assigned.
