Description:

Abstract: NOAA Nautical Chart scan for Cape Blanco to Cape Flattery (1:736,560). Reprojected from original into Oregon Lambert.
Purpose:
The navigational charts produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been used by the recreation and commercial boating communities; however, charts, especially in a digital form, can provide important base data to a much wider audience. These charts, displayed as images, can provide a useful background layer for ocean and coastal geographic information system (GIS) projects.
Supplemental Information:
Maptech, Inc. (http://www.maptech.com/), under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), has an exclusive agreement to distribute NOAA charts in a proprietary format called BSB, which has been a problem for the GIS community because the format was not widely supported by mapping software vendors. For the Atlas project we obtained a CD from Maptech containing most of the current (as of 2001) nautical charts for the Oregon Coast. We reprojected the charts from their original projection to the Oregon Lambert projection and converted the proprietary BSB format charts to the more accessible TIFF format all using the Digital NOAA Nautical Chart Reprojection Utility created by NOAA's Coastal Services Center (see http://www.csc.noaa.gov/crs/Products/chartreproj/). No other actions were performed on the files.
